 TEACHING

For me, teaching is as much about learning as it is about teaching. As an instructor, I see my role as the facilitator of the course. Teaching is an interaction between the instructor and the student. In order to be effective, the focus is on the student’s learning; therefore adjustments may be needed based on student understanding. In order for the student to grow, it is important to find a balance between supporting and challenging the student. I create an environment where students feel invested in the course; it is as much theirs as mine. I design my class discussions and assignments to reflect these ideals of student ownership. I design class discussions to create interactions that develop interest and understanding of the material. In each of my design and technical classes, I develop assignments and projects that allow students to integrate theory into practice while developing their critical thinking skills.

Technology has become an integral part of theatre and technology is continuously changing. It is important, as an educator, to keep abreast of these new technologies. We must not just show students how to use the technologies, but challenge them to think and experiment on their own. By helping to foster critical thinking skills, we also teach skills that students can use in real-world context.
